An adult California rabbit reaches a weight of 4.5 kilograms.

Newborn rabbits of this breed weigh about forty-five grams, and are characterized by high growth progress, reaching a weight of up to two kilograms at the age of two months. After a month, with proper care, the rabbit’s weight increases to three and a half kilograms, and by five months the weight exceeds four kilograms. After reaching this mark, the intensity of their growth sharply declines.

In percentage terms, feed costs per unit of growth, Californian rabbits are approximately on the same line as New Zealand ones. When slaughtered, the yield is about 55-60 percent.

Female California rabbits are quite fertile, and can produce up to eight rabbits in one litter. Thus, a female of this breed is capable of producing about thirty cubs in a year. Baby rabbits that are born have a pure white color, and the pigment spots characteristic of rabbits of the Californian breed are revealed somewhat later.

The minimum acceptable weight for rabbits aged 8 months and older is 3.5 kg, the highest is 5.5 kg. The best weight for this breed is 4.0-5.2 kg.

What determines quality weight gain?

Farm productivity is directly related to the rate at which the animals gain weight. This component of success can be influenced by taking into account the following parameters:

  • natural characteristics of the breed;
  • hereditary qualities of the livestock;
  • maternal qualities of the female;
  • living conditions created for animals;
  • quality and diet;
  • properly conducted perinatal and infant periods.

When planning farming activities, the owner needs to decide for what purpose the rabbits will be raised. If the direction of farming is only meat, meat types of animals are needed.

If a farmer plans to produce meat and skins, then the livestock for breeding must be selected accordingly. Giant breed rabbits show the best weight gain results at minimal cost.

What are the largest rabbits?

Giant rabbits grow faster than others: Flanders, white giant, French ram, Californian and New Zealand white. Breeding these species is profitable for several reasons. The first is the precocity of these breeds and rapid growth rates in comparison with others.

What can influence the rate of weight growth

There is a relationship between the time of year and the mass of animals. Rabbit breeders have come to a consensus that the time of birth affects the growth rate of the baby rabbit. It was noticed that individuals born in winter or early spring develop much faster than those born in the summer-autumn period.

Different types of rabbits develop differently. But on average, from about 80 days of life, feed costs begin to increase significantly.

Representatives of absolutely all varieties of the hare family stop growing, gaining maximum weight after 10 months. As a rule, only fertile females and breeding males are kept until this age. The remaining individuals end their existence by 4 months.

How does milk production affect a rabbit's growth?

The growth rate of baby rabbits is affected by the milk supply of the female. If a female rabbit has high-quality milk in sufficient quantities, if she responsibly approaches the process of feeding her offspring, then the rate of weight gain of the rabbits will be very high. And not only during the suckling period, but also after separation from the mother.

A summer birth gives the rabbit more complete milk than a spring birth. During the first birth, the female’s milk production will be lower than in subsequent ones. The highest indicators can be manifested only in the third lactation.

The best milk production indicators are found in the Californian breed and the Soviet chinchilla. The worst are New Zealand Whites.

The relationship between health and weight gain

An important factor for rapid weight gain is the health of the rabbits. The physical characteristics of eared animals differ from other types of farm animals. The normal body temperature of lagomorphs can vary from 37 to 41 degrees, falling in winter and rising in the summer heat.

Pets on rabbit farms feel comfortable at an ambient temperature of 15 to 22 degrees. But they can withstand frosts down to -30 and heat of +30 degrees.

The milk production of female rabbits is one of the main factors in the high intensity of growth of young animals, not only during the suckling period, but also in subsequent periods of its development. The intensity of growth depends on the biological usefulness of the milk and the milk production of the rabbits. The milk production of rabbits is influenced by the conditions of detention, their age, the season of the year, the number of litters, the lactation period, the number of young rabbits in the nest, and their breed. For good growth of baby rabbits during the suckling period, it is enough if the rabbits produce 100-200 g of milk per day. The duration of lactation depends on the intensity of use of the rabbits (lactation usually lasts 40-45 days), and with compacted litters - 27-28 days. Milk secretion stops 2-4 days before the birth and resumes after the next birth. During the lactation period, the female rabbit produces from 3.5 to 5 kg of milk, this is considered good milk production.

The mammary glands of a female rabbit are located along the body. There are 8 to 10 nipples on either side of the midline of the abdomen.

In the first 2-3 days of lactation, the mammary glands of the rabbit produce colostrum - a product with a consistency similar to cream, which has not only high nutritional value, but also protective functions. Colostrum contains enzymes, a large amount of nutrients, immune bodies, it has a protective effect against various diseases, and has a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal tract of newborn rabbits.

Milk contains a large amount of solids, up to 30-36%, including 10-15% protein, 10-20% fat, 1.8-2.1% milk sugar, 0.64% calcium, 0.44% phosphorus , vitamins, which contributes to extremely intensive growth of rabbits during the suckling period.

The chemical composition of rabbit milk varies depending on the season of the year. In summer it contains about 14% protein and 13% fat, and in winter it contains 12 and 17%, respectively.

You can judge the milk production of rabbits by the condition of the baby rabbits in the nest. In dairy rabbits, the young rabbits lie quietly in the nest, grow well, their body shape is round, the hair is shiny, the skin is dense, without wrinkled folds, but if the young rabbits begin to crawl or leave the nest before 15 days of age, this is the first sign of low milk production of the rabbits. In this case, baby rabbits have disheveled fur, dull, wrinkled skin, and their stomach is usually empty. Quite often, baby rabbits squeak, suck each other, become weak, lag behind in development and often die. From such low-milk rabbits, some of the rabbits should be transferred to high-milk ones. You can more accurately determine the milk production of rabbits by the increase in live weight of the rabbits in the first three weeks of life. During this period they feed only on mother's milk. Milk secretion increases until the 20th day with normal births and until the 17-19th day with compacted ones. An average of 2 g of milk is consumed to increase 1 g of live weight in rabbits. Beetroot, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage will help diversify the diet and supply animals with vitamins. To meet the calcium needs of rabbits, chalk and meat and bone meal should be added to the feed. To ensure that rabbits' teeth can be ground down, tree branches and bark should be placed in the cages. A necessary condition for raising rabbits is the constant availability of clean water.

Rabbits are allowed to mate at the age of 4-6 months with normal fatness: the weight of females must be more than 2.5 kilograms. The female's estrus lasts 3-5 days every 8-9 days. The resumption of estrus after birth occurs on the 1st-2nd day: the female rabbit can be covered immediately. In a year, you can get 4-5 litters from adult females, and 1-2 from young females. The rabbit should not be too thin, but she should not be allowed to become obese. For 8 females they usually leave one male. To increase the growth rate, females are crossed with males of other breeds. Pregnancy lasts about a month. In one litter, the female brings from 6 to 18 rabbits.

Rabbits are slaughtered for meat if they reach a weight of 2.8-3 kilograms at the age of 3-4 months. Further feeding of animals is unprofitable: they eat more feed and grow more slowly. In addition, the meat of young animals has a more delicate taste compared to the meat of adult animals.

Feeding, breeding and caring for rabbits

Pregnant and lactating rabbits should receive an enhanced diet: it should be 10-15% higher than the usual diet.

There are 2 known methods of raising rabbits for meat:

  2. broiler farming.

With normal breeding Rabbits are separated from their mother at the age of 40-45 days. They are fed with cereals and legumes, mixed feed and grain. In winter, it is recommended to add cake or meal, boiled potatoes, and bone meal to the diet. In the diet of rabbits raised for meat, concentrated feed should make up 50-60% of the total feed.

In broiler rearing The young animals are kept together with the female until slaughter at the age of 70-75 days. Sometimes broiler rabbits reach a weight of 1.8-2 kilograms already at the age of 60 days. But this is possible if the females have high milk production, the breed of animals is early maturing and the young animals receive high-quality feeding, including granulated feed containing proteins. With such breeding, the female must be fed generously with expensive concentrated feed to prevent her from “wearing out”. But it should be taken into account that broiler breeding deteriorates the quality of animal skins.

Raising rabbits for meat does not relieve the owner of the need to humanely care for the rabbit. In addition, if an animal develops in comfortable conditions, then its meat will be tastier and more tender.

Rabbits' paws are very large; you should be wary of their claws, which can injure a person. With proper breeding and constant vaccination of the livestock, gray giants are able to recoup all the costs of their maintenance in a year and even make a profit. Silver rabbits are another representative of the hare family, having large sizes and reaching a large body weight. Among these rabbits there are individuals whose body weight is more than 8 kilograms. Basically, the average weight of these rabbits is 5 kilograms. Rabbits are born weighing no more than 80 grams, but by 3 months they already reach a body weight of more than 2.5 kilograms. This breed is known not only for its meat orientation, but also for its good adaptability to climatic conditions, omnivorousness, unpretentiousness in maintenance and early ripening. Female rabbits give birth to 8-10 young rabbits, which by 4 months of life have a slaughter yield of more than 60%. The meat precocity of these large rabbits was achieved through long selection work. These rabbits are not prone to obesity due to a sedentary lifestyle, which makes keeping them in cages beneficial.

Of course, the breed of the animal is of great importance in how much a giant rabbit weighs. But we should not forget about the proper maintenance and feeding of animals. Mandatory vaccination of young animals, compliance with sanitary and hygienic requirements in rabbit farms, balanced nutrition - all this will help make keeping rabbits cost-effective and profitable.
